Hobbit Plays: 03.10.25 – 03.16.25

Hobbit Plays News

This week of game sessions was outstanding! Qvaid and I worked through a decent bit of Split Fiction through out the week. The gaming sessions with my gaming group was a bit out of sorts again this weekend. This particular occasion (on Sunday) it was my fault. Which I described a bit below in the Honorable Mentions and Highlights.

As always the gaming was still stellar! Even on the days we didn’t all get together for something, we still managed to chat in Discord. There was some surprises for this weekend I wasn’t really expecting. Usually when we latch onto games like Hell Let Loose it will span several weeks.

This weekend we not only did not play Hell Let Loose, we fired up a game we haven’t played in some time AND also got to play a game Error and I picked up awhile back, but never got to really play. As it turns out that game (Phasmophobia) is a really great, fun, and incredible experience. The thrills and chills it inspires for me, reminds me a lot of the first time times I played 7 Days to Die way back when!

Of course that said, nothing really and truly surprises me with our group these days. Well, except that we haven’t all been back to 7 Days to Die as a larger group in some time. That has surprised me. Although, Eldon (my brother) did bring it up just recently.

Honorable Mentions

7 Days to Die

I know Falken put some time into the zombie apocalypse of 7 Days to Die some this week. I can’t attest to how much really as a good bit of the gang has been fairly MIA for a spell of time. To know knowledge, Falken is still playing on a local game and Iron hasn’t fired up the 7 Days to Die dedicated server that he runs.

Starfield

Aces was seen roaming the vast galaxies of Starfield some this week as well. He speaks very highly of the game, and ironically it seems to have a good hold of his attention during the time frames he’s set aside to play solo at least. Sadly, the game is single player only to my knowledge, so while his description peaked my interest, I’m doubtful I’ll look into it much further than that given my current gaming schedule.

Highlights

Days played: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday

Players: Qvaid, Hobbit

Comments: I won’t get into too much detail on Split Fiction since the game is still incredibly new, and I don’t want to ruin anything for anyone with spoilers this early on.

I can say without out a doubt, that Qvaid and I absolutely love this amazing game! It has humor, story, action, puzzles. The game play transitions from 3D to 2D scroller, and other hybrid like game play that makes it an incredible and unique adventure!

I am suspicious that Qvaid and I ended the week being close to completion of the game. Personally, I hope I am wrong as we’ve been enjoying it so much, I hate to see it come to the end. Even with that possibility in mind, it is one of the greatest games we’ve play this year.

Just a plethora of extravagant work from the Hazelight Studio! Qvaid and I have nothing but great things to say concerning Split Fiction!

On a side note for any interested, the game runs extremely well on Fedora 41 KDE Plasma! Which we started playing on launch day of March 6th! From what I’ve gathered from protondb, Split Fiction seems to run just fine under most Linux distributions.

Days played: Saturday, Sunday

Players: Aces, Error, Kilen, Hobbit

Comments: I was present for the Sons of the Forest session on Saturday. Error and his family were down on Saturday to weather out the storms heading into both our areas. While not ideal, we managed to get Error setup on Qvaid’s laptop and he loaded up a few games via Steam to play while he was here.

It so happens one of the two games he loaded was Sons of the Forest. I had actually loaded it up prior when I started noticing everyone’s interest peaking a bit. Figured I’d get ahead of the curb for a change.

In any case, we had a fairly decent start on Saturday and played up until a point where we needed to break to eat. Mother nature had other plans as our dinner was delayed while we hid in the hallway until after the tornado warnings had expired.

After dinner and the chores were done, we didn’t make it back to SotF on Saturday, but Aces, Error, and Kilen did pick it back up on Sunday.

Aces logged into Discord and noted Kilen was doing some building. He decided to buy SotF since a Steam sale was going, and Aces and Kilen started a session, followed a bit after with Error. They played decent length of a session Sunday, until ultimately Aces had to call it for the day, and as Error called it as well, Kilen and I were speaking with Eldon in Discord, and we moved to No Man’s Sky.

Days played: Saturday

Players: Error, Kilen, Hobbit

Comments: I can’t recall exactly how it happened at this point, but we got on the discussion of Phasmophobia some how. On Saturday after the storms had died down, and Error and his fam had arrived back home and got settled in, he loaded up Phasmophobia and we were off hunting ghosts after finishing up the training.

As Error and my first set of runs, I have to say the game is quite a bit of fun. The game can be even more horrifying if you don’t use any external voice chat and rely solely on the in-game voice. It basically prevents you from ‘knowing’ exactly what is going on once a team member is killed.

Over all, it was an amazing time, and I’m hopeful they might be up for some more gaming sessions in Phasmophobia later. We haven’t delved too deep into the lore and obviously we are still lacking in some areas in terms of the mechanics, however, I feel like it could be a set of grand adventures if we were to dive a bit deeper into more sessions.

In truth, I don’t recall it exactly, as I thought I died every round, but Kilen said there was the one round that we all made it out. It was the only round Kilen and I made it out if I recall. LOL.

We discussed it in Discord with Aces on Sunday, but sadly, he didn’t seem to be too interested in the game. (At least not yet.). Maybe he’ll come around. It reminds me just a bit of games like Dead Before Daylight, with the exception that the ‘ghost’ (or enemy) in that game is controlled by a player. It can host up to 4 players, so it is one that we would have to limit depending on the number of people wanting to play, but still not a bad idea to fall back on here and there for some jump scares and good times!

Days played: Friday, Sunday

Players: Kilen, SoSirius, Hobbit

Comments: SoSirius and I played No Man’s Sky on Friday while chatting with Kilen in Discord. At the time, Kilen was in Sons of the Forest toying with the building mechanics in a game with no enemies. SoSirius and I started the Expedition 17: Titan on Friday after toying with a bit of exploration initially.

It was the first expedition I’ve ever attempted, and we got off to a relatively slow start. It was mostly my fault. I had no idea as to what to expect, and I didn’t adapt very well to the effectively the fresh start expeditions throw you into. I mean to be fair, I kind of thought it might be something of that sort.

Over the course of the evening, I had completed some random tasks through out several of the phases, but nothing that appeared to be of a significant amount. I was of the mind set, that I likely wouldn’t complete the expedition in total based on scheduling. Even still, I was enjoying it, and figured it was worth the attempt.

SoSirius and I were supposed to meet up again over the course of the weekend. To that end, he jumped into Discord some Saturday late evening, but ended up hopping out to work on some things on his desktop, and I didn’t see him back on in a reasonable amount of time, so I called it a night.

On Sunday, I hopped back into NMS with the intent of working on the Expedition. Initially, Kilen was back in Sons of the Forest with his build project, and after watching his stream for a bit, I decided I could use the idle time to see what I could accomplish. My intent was to wait on SoSirius, but I hadn’t heard anything else from him, and I really wanted to see if I might be able to complete the expedition before it ended in roughly two weeks. I know that is still a decent amount of time, but my gaming schedule is pretty tight these days.

I ended up spending the entirety of Sunday working on the Expedition. Now, what I discovered is I wasted some time working on things that were not ‘helpful’ towards the expedition in and of itself. Once I locked down on the expedition tasks, I managed to finish it before turning in REALLY late Sunday night. I was pretty stoked to have the expedition completed, and even more so when I found out how the ‘completion’ works. As it turns out you can bring a select number of things back to your ‘saves’ AND the items you don’t bring back are sold for units and nanites respectively.

You get the expedition rewards for free (upon completion and collection) AND you can even purchase the ship and multitool you had should you want too for a reasonable amount of nanites. I’m still debating actually grabbing the multitool I was using to see if any of the tech might be viable for any of my other gear. I might have done the same with my ship, but I didn’t know how things worked initially, and I had my Living Ship as the ship for when I ended the expedition and ended up purchasing it for 1995 nanites before realizing I could have got it for free from the Quicksilver merchant in the Anomaly.

Lessons learned all in all. I’ll know more about how it works on my next attempt, and I can use the mechanics to be more in my favor on the next run should I make another adventure out of a new expedition later on (or hopefully, maybe Hello Games will run them again at some point like they did in the past!? 🙂 )
