Friday The 13th: The Game is another great game I let slip through the cracks on games that should be retired. In this particular case, I don’t recall ever attempting to run it in Linux in any distribution.
I was running Windows exclusively when our group decided to give this game a trial run. Over all, it was a fantastic experience for several of us.
At Error’s recommendation, Error, Kilen, and I purchased the game and played for a couple weeks. While it was a fairly short lived set of adventures, it was certainly a good one.
On that note, the retirement of Friday The 13th: The Game doesn’t come from any ill will towards Linux or any of its various distributions. No, unfortunately, it comes because the game was shutdown permanently on December 31st of 2024 when the licensing that was in dispute was cancelled. You can’t even purchase the game in Steam any more at this time.
“As of December 31st, 2023, this title will no longer be available for purchase. The game will continue to function through at least December 31, 2024 if it is already in your Library.‘
All that said, the brief time Error, Kilen, and I spent in FT13TH: The Game was a miraculous adventure. For a horror survival based game, it certainly held an outstanding community. We encountered several extremely nice and compassionate individuals in numerous games we played over the short course of time. They were willing to help you learn the ropes in the chaotic and nightmarish adventure of running for your lives from Jason.
Now the community certainly also held it’s various share of internet trolls no doubt, but I can’t help but feel like the good certainly out weighed the bad in the adventures our group shared with those random gamers on our quest to just survive the night of Jason’s wrath!
Of all the games I’ve ‘had’ or ‘chose’ to retire on the site, this will certainly be one that I at least personally will miss.
Game long my friends, Game hard!
