Destiny 2: Retired

News

While I can’t speak for the rest of the group, Destiny 2 has entered the retired phase for me. In truth, I haven’t played it for some time. Today, it dawned on me, I couldn’t play it even if I wanted too.

While looking up information for a patch concerning it today, I discovered that their anti-cheat doesn’t allow for Linux based users to play it. This alongside that unless something has changed recently, they ban users they detect playing under Linux.

At this time, I have no plans to return to Windows for my daily driver, and as such that simply puts the game out of my ability to use it. This is a choice I made, and I realize I have to live with said choice, or dual boot, or move back to Windows to get around it. While I find Destiny 2 to be a great game (at least while I was playing it.), I don’t like it enough to have to make such a drastic change to how I ‘want’ to run my computing devices. It has fallen into a category I can ‘simply live without.’

Game publishers and Devs frequently have to make choices concerning what platforms their games will support. What I find incredibly frustrating about situations like this are Linux users don’t ask for support. All we generally need is for you to allow us the opportunity to play your game. Steam, Lutris, Heroic, Bottles, etc… all make it ‘possible’ for us to get your game working on our own. Generally speaking, if they use Battleye, or EAC the game will just work with Steam’s Proton and/or the other various launchers I just mentioned. All they have to do is contact their anti-cheat service of preference and tell them, ‘Allow Linux users’ via the anti-cheat method. That is usually met with a slew of BS claiming that Linux users are full of cheaters, or it’s a security risk, etc… While I’m sure Linux has its share of cheaters, it can’t be any more than the number of cheaters they already encounter in the Windows environment. It’s utter insanity for companies to make this plea and expect anyone in the gaming communities to sympathize. Most of the cheating tools are written to run in Windows via what some old schoolers like to call: script kiddies.

TLDR: There won’t be any more posts or updates for Destiny 2 on this site. On a lighter note, I don’t think the site even gets any real traffic. It’s just a hobby for me that I enjoy. There won’t be any impact on their bottom line, just like ultimately the decision to not support Linux, or Steam Deck ‘might’ not impact their bottom line. It’s just an aging Hobbit venting his frustration about how silly some of these companies make themselves look with foolish decisions and excuses about security and fairness, etc…

Please feel free to insert the standard <just use Windows here> comment here. 🙂
