Hobbit Plays: 04.28.25 – 05.04.25

Hobbit Plays News

Another week that literally just flew by. I believe this was the weekend, I’ve had in April that we didn’t have a plan of some sort on a Saturday and/or Sunday. Although, I should note, that isn’t really a complaint mind you.

In a bit of irony, I didn’t really get any gaming done on Friday evening. Kilen was working in Sons of the Forest on an island base idea he’s been tinkering around with on and off for a bit now.

I spent a decent portion of Friday evening setting my desktop back up after a reload earlier in the day of Linux Mint. Technically speaking, I had things ready to go before game time on Friday evening, however Kilen was tinkering around with Sons of the Forest, and I got side tracked with an issue installing a game with Lutris that was giving me fits!

Over the course of the week, Qvaid and I had quite a few grand adventures in Dysmantle! That game is certainly shaping up to be quite a good bit of fun!

By Saturday, everything had fell back into a normal routine with Error, Kilen, and myself hitting up some Project Zomboid! We wrapped up that session and hit some Baldur’s Gate 3 once Aces was on and ready to game a bit later in the day.

Sunday, I was a bit out of sorts, and not feeling the greatest. I had a few sessions of No Man’s Sky over the course of the day, and finished out the later part of the evening watching The Rookie with Qvaid before we ultimately turned in for the night to prep for the next week of work.

Not quite the game feast I’ve become used too as of late, but still a great week/weekend in the over all scheme of things!

Highlights

Days played: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday

Players: Qvaid, Hobbit

Comments: Qvaid and I had a blast this week playing Dysmantle. The mechanics of this unique gem are certainly an interesting take for co-op game play.

While it doesn’t have quite as much in the way of humor, it certainly has a way of enthralling the two of us at least! We have been wandering around this new apocalyptic wasteland gathering resources, slaying ex-humans, and unlocking all manner of abilities, skills, and gear.

We ended the week on Thursday at level 33 with a decent start on farming.

The game can be a bit grindy at times, but it’s managed to hold Qvaid and my attention quite well over all thus far.

We have all of the available DLC for Dysmantle (At least to my knowledge at this time), and even managed to get a few pets on our co-op adventures!

We did have the unfortunate dilemma of having to start eradicating the local deer. We were struggling to find hides we needed to progress quite a few of the paths for gear upgrades, trinkets, etc… Qvaid took up to that surprisingly well all things considered though.

There is a good bit of back tracking through previous areas as you unlock the ability to ‘dysmantle’ other objects for the much needed resources. In some cases, we find ourselves scouring the map hoping to catch a glimpse of sources of rubber, steel, or other supplies we just so happen to be running low on.

There is quite a bit of things to do, plenty of action, puzzles, upgrades, crafts, fishing, and even a bit of farming. Qvaid and I have certainly been impressed with what Dysmantle has to offer so far in our new journey.

Days played: Saturday

Players: Error, Kilen, Hobbit

Comments: After some discussion, we decided 2 campaigns of Baldur’s Gate 3 was a bit more than Error and I wanted to participate in. Especially considering, those two campaigns are effectively running neck and neck in the content.

We also spoke with Kilen, and he was onboard as well. I suspect the fact that he also plays a campaign with him and Aces, alongside of the occasional bit of solo play that he also might have been tiring of repeating the content.

In any case, we went over our list of games, and ultimately decided it was time to start another run of Project Zomboid. We discussed the possibility of a previous game we had, but in truth, I’m not even sure I had a backup of it at this point. Our last known date of play on that world was sometime in Sept. of 2024.

I do try to keep backups of things of that nature, but given the fact that we are fast approaching one year since our last run, I’ve likely long since removed that data.

One thing I will try to make sure of at this point though, is that I pull backups of the configs I have for the world and my characters. I had to reset all of those, and remembering how we setup the rules and I configure my character is a bit of a struggle after a lengthy amount of time.

We got off to a somewhat rocky start. Error was effectively trapped down by a horde almost immediately after coming into the game. Something about the Zombie AI seems to have gotten, um, better!? It seems to be quite a bit harder to shake them then we remember.

In prior play usually just getting out of their sight was enough. Now it seems like the noise, light, and sight factor have changed. Once they see you enter a building, they are relentless to follow you there. We could be mistaken, but it certainly seemed to be the case for us in our play on Saturday, both earlier in the day, and again after the BG3 session ended when Kilen and Aces decided to call it.

Days played: Saturday

Players: Aces, Error, Kilen, Hobbit

Comments: I can’t speak for Aces and Kilen, but Error and I are down to a single campaign at this point. As I stated in the PZ comments, the multiple campaigns were just starting to wear on us both. In truth, I’d argue that they were wearing on the group as a whole.

BG3 is a fantastic game, but it can also be quite time consuming. The repeat of content toppled with interruptions can certainly take a toll on the game play. I still have fun myself, as I generally have something else to bide my time when someone has to afk, take a break, etc… More often than not, that someone is me as well.

We had a pretty good session and I believe we are fast approaching the end of the first act of BG3. We made a stop by the Hag’s lair to deal with her, and we might have one more stop to make before ultimately moving on to Act II to progress the game.

Of all the games like BG3 I’ve played, I can’t help but notice just what Larian Studios has done for this genre. BG3 is indeed an amazing piece of work.

I will add that co-op game play with BG3 certainly takes some patience. It’s hard to sate everyone’s play style in a game like this. Those that are just murder hobos, those that want to play heroes, those that prefer combat, those that want a mix of combat, story, humor, etc…

Our group has done fairly well so far, although we’ve had a few spells where you can tell the numerous campaigns involved are starting to wear a bit. Over all though, it’s a manner for those of us that don’t have the opportunity, or can’t necessarily afford the time to get together for a social gathering to experience a bit of once we once were a part of.

D&D has always been a favorite game of mine to play. Although my dice rolls certainly make it a difficult game for me to say the least. I seem to have at least a stroke of good luck here and there with the video game version of it as it were.

Most D&D games, I get to play the comic relief with my dice rolls. It’s nice to be able to play on a level at least somewhat equal to those around me in BG3. 🙂
